Stepwells are a distinctive form of subterranean water resource and storage system on the Indian subcontinent, and have been constructed since the 3rd millennium.
Befitting its name, the Rani-ki-Vav is now considered to be the queen among stepwells in India.
Built in the 11th century during the dynastic rule of the Solanki, the Rani-ki-Vav (stepwell) in Patan in North Gujarat is among the 25 Cultural World Heritage Sites chosen for restoration by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
